Abstract
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a medicinal herb that has been used in different traditional medicines to enhance overall health of humans and animals. The objective of research was to evaluate how licorice root powder (LPR) containing diets affected growth performance, digestive enzymes activity, mucosal Immunity and antioxidant status in grass carp. During feeding trial, fish were fed with LPR for 60 days at inclusion levels of 5g, 10g and 20 per/Kg of diet and showed good health with no reported mortality. The growth statistics of Grass Carp fed LRP supplemented diets considerably improved throughout the course of the experiment, with the most significant growth (P < 0.05) reported in group fed with 20g and 10g of LRP and had greater average final weight gain (WG), % weight gain (%WG), standard growth rate (SGR), and thermal condition factor (TCF) than those in the control group. However, FCR results indicated non-significant change between control and treated groups (P > 0.05). Maximum increase in activity of mucosal immune parameters were also observed in group treated with 20g LRP inclusion. In addition, activity of antioxidants (LPO, SOD, GSH, and GST) and digestive enzymes (Protease, amylase, and lipase) were significantly enhanced in the experimental groups (Pā€‰<ā€‰0.05) than the control group. Maximum activity of antioxidants in liver, kidney and intestine was observed in 20g LPR group but 5g LPR group showed maximum GST activity in the intestine of fish. Protease, amylase, and lipase activities in the intestine were significantly higher in 20g, 5g and 10g treated groups, respectively. The optimal inclusion of LRP in Grass Carp diets was discovered to be 20g/kg of diet and it increased growth, enhanced mucosal immunity, digestive and antioxidant capacities of Grass carp and can be used to improve overall health status of grass carp.
